Dr. Farmer’s Very Own Smile Makeover with Veneers [Before & After Photos]

A jar of M&M's on a lawnI’ve been practicing dentistry for almost 30 years.

Even though dentistry is complex and always evolving, I tend to relate teeth to the candy, M&M’s – especially in this case with my own smile makeover.

How so?

M&M’s have a hard candy shell, then a chocolate center. Teeth are the same way.

The hard candy shell represents your enamel, and the chocolate represents the inner layer or the dentin, where the nerve lives.

Why I needed a smile makeover

I have seen what happens to people with the type of wear and breakdown I saw in my own dental system. And I knew what that might look like in another 10 years.

I had worn through the hard candy layer (enamel) on many of my teeth and into the chocolate (dentin) that wears at a rate of approximately nine times faster than the enamel.

So I was at a crossroads at 55 years old.

I did not want to have the chocolate (dentin) melt in my mouth.

Once dentin starts to wear, there are a few choices:

  • We can protect the teeth with a nighttime appliance to slow the wear.
  • We can add artificial enamel to the teeth.
  • We can place a combination of veneers and crowns.

Why I chose veneers and crowns

I decided to have crowns and veneers placed to restore my teeth.

The reason:

I could improve my teeth even better than the originals in terms of esthetics. Plus, I could have enough work done structurally to set them up with good function and mechanics for years to come.

All said and done:

I received two ceramic restorations, 10 veneers on the upper arch, and 10 veneers on the lower arch.

My primary motivation for doing this was to practice what I preach to my patients and teach other dentists across the country.

And I wanted a nice smile again! That is reason enough, even without the wear.

P.S. Smile makeovers are my specialty

You may already know this, but for the past 7-8 years, I have been teaching for the Clinical Mastery Series… This text opens a new tab to the CMS website… (CMS).

This company puts on a series of 8-9 separate courses for dentists wanting to learn how to do cosmetic dentistry and full mouth rehabilitation cases.

It has been a tremendous honor for me to be chosen for this position, and more importantly, it has connected me to hundreds of dentists across the country.

In addition to my traveling and teaching role with CMS, I also create and present online dental continuing education content and administrate and moderate their private online content, which has become even more important over the past year with the travel difficulties we are under right now.
